My story

“I am from Gulu district in northern Uganda. My parents were brutally killed by the Lords Resistance Army rebels, a long, long time ago and I remained all alone. I decided to relocate to Kampala and live on the streets. I was moving on the street day and night. Sometimes I couldn’t eat for a whole day. I was with a group of young boys my size. We were thieves, stealing people’s money and things for eating like fruits.  Staying on the street was not good for young children. I had no clothes, only those that were thrown away. I wanted better clothes, so that I could look smart, but I had no way of getting these things. I stayed two months without bathing, so I developed lice on my body. I was having a bad smell. I was almost killed because of stealing people’s things. I stayed two years without studying or going to school.

Before I joined L.E.A.D Uganda, I stayed with my “aunt”, who really is not my aunt, but a kind-hearted woman who found me on the street one day and adopted me. We both worked in a stone quarry in order to earn a living. It was very hard to get enough money to pay my school fees and at times we would sleep without food. When I woke up to go stone quarrying, the other kids in the neighborhood went to school, and I felt rejected by the world.

Then the good thing: God was on my side. Through my new aunt’s efforts we came across L.E.A.D Uganda and a person called Uncle Steve. They took me in. Thankfully, I am now in school at Seeta High, one of the very top schools in Uganda. I enjoy basketball, soccer and volleyball. I like to read books – especially books about medicine, surgery and computers.

I hope one day to be like Doctor Ben Carson. His life challenges me to be the very best that I can be. Only after joining L.E.A.D Uganda, was I able to wear my first pair of shoes. Now I am getting a good feeding. I am healthy and I am no longer disturbed by the rebels or any bad things. When I grow up and finish school, I want to become a surgical doctor and be influential in my country so I can help other orphans – as kind people have helped me.”
