My story
“My dad, Bongmin, died when I was young. My dad was out digging for food when the rebels attacked. He tried to run so they shot him. It gave me a big responsibility to look after my brothers and sisters. My mom didn’t cry — she just hugged me a lot.
I hate my early memories of being in a village when the rebels raided. They raided both night and day without care. Any time they like they just attack and take the boys they want. I remember the first time they attacked. They tore our clothes off and beat everyone using big sticks. I know at least fifty people who were killed, including my father.
I am a former child soldier. I was abducted for eight months when I was just 7-years-old. If I were still in the village, I think I would have been abducted again. If I were still living in the IDP camp, without the care of L.E.A.D Uganda, I would have to work while still in school to make some money to live with and to pay my school fees.
I would like to be an engineer. My legacy, I hope, will be to encourage disadvantaged kids, raise their quality of life, and help them succeed in life. It is very important to help raise Africa and Uganda up. One of the very worst things affecting Africa is the malaria mosquito. It kills so many people every year. Life would change so much if we can get rid of it. I want to help.
I can’t tell my dad about my life now but I have explained to my mom. My mom is proud of me. I bless Uncle Steve and L.E.A.D Uganda in my prayers. I thank God for being chosen.”
