My story

“I am the first born in my family. We live in a hut and me and my siblings sleep on the floor. I go to school at Kamuge Primary school in Kagoli, Mbale District, which is a four kilometers walk from my home. My brother is in school and our last born hasn’t started school yet.

I always wanted to go to a good school but my father didn’t have enough money, and so I kept praying that he gets money. My father Painento Mpade is a junior school teacher. He earns 50,000 shillings a month ($24). My mother stays at home and works in the garden.

This year Mum Monica, the Director of L.E.A.D Uganda visited my family and interviewed me. Later I was told there was a possibility of joining a good school in Kampala the capital city if I worked hard. In August I was picked from my home and brought to Kampala. It was the very first time I had been in a big city. I was astonished about many things in the city: lights everywhere, lots of vehicles and noise. However it was an interesting experience. I went for the first time to Theatre Labonita and watched a play called “Beefless Bone” which was written by Steven Wasswa, a L.E.A.D Uganda student. It was so educational.

I am in the 5th grade at Budo Junior School, which is the most prestigious junior school in Uganda. I am so happy, because my childhood dream is on its way.

I want to become a doctor. I want to help children from poor families go to good schools like Budo Junior and achieve their dreams. I will also build my family a house and help my siblings.”
