My story
“I was awarded a full scholarship from the Government of Uganda to study pharmacy at University. I am the happiest man on the planet. From a quarry boy to a pharmacist! It’s unbelievable, but now it’s true. I think now that nothing is impossible.
This term I was elected to the Guild Council at Makerere University. I am responsible for representing students from Nkrumah Dormitory to the university and the Government of Uganda. I just hope I really serve together with other council members. It is a challenge. But as my hall motto states ” Forward We Move”
My father got sick when I was in primary school, so he couldn’t work some days. I was chased away from school. I would cry, but it didn’t work. In 4th grade, I really worked hard and trusted almighty God and became first in class. The teachers called me back, even after I had been chased out for not paying school fees. My struggle was to find secondary school fees. My father and mother couldn’t pay. I hawked second hand clothes but did not make enough. I began to work in one of the rock quarries in Bukasa. Breaking rocks into pebbles enabled me to earn a little money. It was such a hard life. While in the quarry, I joined L.E.A.D Uganda.
At Uganda Martyr’s Secondary School – Namugongo, a top high school, I took a rigorous science track that included biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics which I passed with grades of A, A, B, and B respectively. I studied hard, but I could not have gotten to this point without the help of others. In addition to studying hard, I was a student leader. I was chosen to represent Uganda at a youth conference on AIDS in Nigeria. I helped tutor other students in my slum neighborhood.
I look forward to my future. Pharmacy is more than just counting pills. The pharmacist’s role in society is to promote the well being of their patients. It is a trustworthy occupation that reaches into almost all aspects of medicine and healthcare. I am indeed happy to reach this point in life, because now I am looked at importantly by my nation and by my family.”
