My Story “I was born on June 21, 1999 to Anthony Sekanjako and Mirembe Samari in Bulamu village, Gayaza; Wakiso district. I am the last born among three girls and two boys. Our father abandoned us while we were still young and left us with our mother and got another wife. He stopped sending us any support and our mother had to rely on selling tomatoes, cassava and potatoes on the roadside. My mother was earning 5000 shillings ($2.50), a week. This was not enough but we managed to survive by the grace of God. My siblings went to a cheap government funded school, walking on foot daily and sometimes with no food. It was bad seeing by brothers and sisters walk to school with tattered uniforms that were always repaired by our mother. I told my mum one day that when I grow up, I will help her and my siblings live a better life. She seemed to believe my dreams and she always prayed to God for me. When I was seven I joined 1st grade in a local nearby school with the help of Mum’s church friends. I was excited to be in school, but the condition of my sisters and brothers seems to have followed me as well, as I kept being sent home for lack of fees and for only putting on half of the school uniform. Last year in August, my Mum got information from a friend about an organization called L.E.A.D Uganda that was helping talented young children. I went there with my Mum. I was confident that, if interviewed, I was going to go through, because my school reports were excellent and I am talented in electronics. I help our neighbors to repair their torches (flash lights) and radios. At the end of my interview, I was the most excited boy on the planet because I was granted sponsorship. I am now in St. John Bosco Katende Primary School. I am one of the top students in my class. I want to become an electronic engineer. Then I will help my family and my village community to overcome poverty and live better lives.”
