Frequently Asked Questions
What do the letters L – E – A – D in L.E.A.D Uganda stand for?
L.E.A.D Uganda is an acronym for LOCATE, EDUCATE, ACHIEVE, DREAM.
We locate the best and the brightest children living on the edges of society. We educate them in the top schools, where they achieve excellence. Our scholars dream of becoming entrepreneurs, artists, doctors, and engineers who will help Africa.
You help children become leaders. What do you mean by leader?
17-year-old Paul Ntege says it best: “We L.E.A.D Uganda students believe that we will be the change we’ve always wanted to see – not only our lives but also in Uganda and in the world at large.
We all have dreams, dreams of curing AIDS, dreams of being teachers, dreams of being entrepreneurs, dreams of helping fellow kids, dreams of achieving in our lives, improving our country, changing Africa.
But without education we will never realize these dreams. It is through the generosity, compassion and commitment of people like you that I and my fellow L.E.A.D Uganda scholars have been able to attend school, transform our lives, and help others. We thank you.”
About Paul: “At the age of 12, I started working in a rock quarry to raise money for my school fees. I was trying to study and work at the same time. Through LEAD Uganda, I managed to get back on track and focus solely on my education. I attended the African Leadership Academy (ALA) in Johannesburg, South Africa. I want to be a business man.”
How does L.E.A.D Uganda choose it’s students?
We have a rigorous selection process which is discussed in detail on this page: http://www.leaduganda.org/our-students/how-students-are-selected/
What happens if a student does not achieve academic excellence?
We are a leadership program, but also a family to our children. Students are members of L.E.A.D Uganda for life. Like any famiily, we do not throw money away. Our young people know they must work hard if they want us to pay for their education. Some kids, while they may be leaders, do not excel academically. If a student works hard and does not make the grade, we enroll them in vocational school and help them get started in their adult careers.
The L.E.A.D Uganda approach works even with our students who do not excel academically. Alisen did not receive a 1st grade on his “A” level national exam. We loaned him money to start farming in his village. He created the miost modern farm in his area. Profits from his farm enabled him to pay for college, where he studies social work.
Is L.E.A.D Uganda a faith-based program?
L.E.A.D Uganda is a registered local NGO in Uganda. We are a 501(c)3 non-profit in the U. S. We consider the work we do – transforming the lives of forgotten children- to be both uplifting and spiritual. We want to work with your church, synagogue, mosque, or temple to turn forgotten children into leaders and create a better future for the children of this world.
