L.E.A.D Uganda is an independent Ugandan organization with an independent board of directors and staff.In the United States L.E.A.D Uganda / the Stephen Shames Foundation raises money for the Ugandan NGO, but is not involved with the day to day operations of the program. The Ugandans run all aspects of the L.E.A.D Uganda educational leadership initiative.
L.E.A.D Uganda locates forgotten children, educates them, and helps them achieve their dreams.
L.E.A.D Uganda is an educational leadership initiative for abandoned children affected by AIDS, war, and poverty. We give hope to children who had no future.
Staff
The NGO is run by Director Monica Nankoma, a professional staff of five native Ugandans. The staff includes a Chief Operating Officer, two program officers, and an office manager. The staff are trained counselors of children affected by trauma. They visit our kids at school, mentor them, and care for them when they are sick.
Volunteers / Community Partners
The staff is assisted by volunteers: the parents / guardians of our students, committed people from the community, and partner organizations.
The guardians whose children L.E.A.D Uganda enrolls in school and people from the community, look after those who have no family. These wonderful, committed volunteers provide emotional support, moral guidance, and love to our orphans.
L.E.A.D Uganda”s volunteers are assisted by community organizations that work closely with us. They help Monica and the staff select the very smartest, most deserving youngsters. These community partners keep our children connected with their communities and culture.

Two Organizations / Same Name
We use the same name, L.E.A.D Uganda, because we have the same mission of helping children achieve, but – since we are in two sovereign nations, there are two separate organizations. In Uganda L.E.A.D Uganda is registered as a local NGO. In the United States the Stephen Shames Foundation DBA L.E.A.D Uganda is a 501(c)3 non-profit.
Board of Directors
Simon Nfumbe has a wealth of project management experience in the local and international development sector. He currently works with BMS Minerals Limited as the Environmental, Health and Safety professional. Simon was contracted by Tullow Oil Uganda Operation in the Hoima District. He assisted in the rigging and drilling of oil wells in the Lake Albert Region. He was in charge of formulating policies, standards and procedures in the areas of environment, health and safety, as well as, complying with international standards and national legislation. Simon has worked as a Field Assistant with the United Nations World Food Program in) Kumi and Soroti districts. He was Environmental Technical Officer for the Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited and Risk Manager / Assurance Officer with Eskom Uganda Limited in charge of Nalubaale and Kiira Power stations.
Monica Nankoma – Director of L.E.A.D Uganda Ltd., has been a business administrator for ten years working with various companies and non-profits. Monica recently served as director of Life in Africa Foundation, which helps low income women through micro-enterprise. Ms. Nankoma held corporate positions at WeighTec International, a leading company in the field of weighing scales and calibrations; and Danitrax Uganda Ltd, a car tracking and fleet management company.
Janet Baluka – Administrator / Secretary with the Ugandan Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. Emma Obwori. Certified Public Accountant with a management consulting agency which majors in accounting, taxation, project evaluation, financing, investigative audits, and business plans.
Deo Gombya – Runs a car service in Kampala, Jinja, and Gulu. Deo is a trained counselor who specializes in helping traumatized children. Father of Maria.
Joyce Kasujja – Peer Counselor in HIV / AIDS. Volunteer at Nsambya Home Care. Mother of Paddy, Michael, Wasswa, Moreen, Brian, and Freddy.
Margaret Nabuuma – Volunteer at TASO, an AIDS support organization. Activist and HIV / AIDS counselor. Mother of Hilda and Derrick.

Coordinates activities at the house. Looks after the children during breaks. Mother of Rahim and Fahim.

Chairman of Kalungi Village in Rakai. Remegio and the village elders protect our children’s land and interests while they are at school.

A nurse and HIV / AIDS counselor. Community activist. Teaches sewing to teenagers. Looks after a score of non-related orphans. Benon’s aunt.
